After ObjectBar is installed, it might already ask you what you want to select for a theme. Skim over reading this step to give you an idea of what do to. If it didn't ask you anything, continue reading. Go into Start/Program Files/Object Desktop/ and click on ObjectBar. Once in ObjectBar, click on File/Load/Theme Browser. Scroll down until you see a theme entitled, "Windows XP." On the dropdown menu, select, "WindowsXP Blue," and hit, "Load." You now have an XP TaskBar. ObjectBar should automatically set your regular start menu to disappear. If not, go into, Theme Tools/Theme Options to change it. Next go into File/General Options and click on the tab entitled, "Startup Options," and select, "Run Objectbar automatically at startup." Now proceed to editing the windows.
This version of WindowBlinds is free, it just doesn't come with all the skinning capabilities of the new trial version of 6.4. In order to apply the windows xp theme with this, you will need to install the zip file below. DO NOT UNZIP THE ZIP FILE! It doesn't matter where you save it, as long as you know where it is. This instructable has made your desktop look like Windows XP. But say you wanted to take it a little further? In themexp, click on bootskin_free. Install this software. Next download the *.bootskin file on =10153&libid=32 and save it anywhere on your harddrive. Next open Bootskin, click File/Import From File and navigate to where you saved the bootskin file. Click on it and select "Open." The click apply. You now have the XP SP3 bootscreen!
The Start menu received its first major overhaul in XP, switching to a two-column layout with the ability to list, pin, and display frequently used applications, recently opened documents, and the traditional cascading "All Programs" menu. These files have a unique .themepack extension which is just another zip format containing all of the elements of a theme including the background images, Aero glass colors, sounds, cursors, icons, screen savers, etc.
If your computer is running Windows Vista that supports Aero, simply double-click the .theme file that is present in the them folder you just extracted. This will set your windows border glass to the color of the Windows 7 theme and your wallpaper to the default background of the theme. However, this background picture will disappear when you reboot your computer, so you need to set that as a permanent background.
Most Windows 7 themes only contain a glass color and desktop backgrounds. However, some may contain screensavers, sounds, cursors, and icons as well. The good part is that you can use the elements on your Vista / XP theme as well.
Sounds - You can copy the sound files (.wav) to the default media folder (C:\Windows\Media), and if you have set the Windows 7 theme in Windows Vista as described above, it will automatically these sounds. Else, you will have to manually change your sounds from the Control Panel.

Is it possible to detect if any sound plays on a windows xp machine? Help in any language would be useful. I basically need to write a program that runs all the time and outputs some text to a file whenever a sound plays. I don't need any specific information about the sound, just whether a sound is playing. I don't care whether the speakers are actually powered on or anything like that.

WSUS Offline allows you to download updates for Windows XP (and Office 2013) to update them with Microsoft updates, once and for all. After that, you can easily run the executable from the (virtual) DVD or USB drive to update Windows XP without an internet and/or network connection, without hassle.
I found version 9.2.1 of the UpdateGenerator is the last version to support windows xp. However after running it several times. I then check it with windows update online and it shows 15 or so updates that need to be installed. Have you run into this?
The windows update cab a.k.a Wsusscn2.cab also has errors now too in which some office updates have 3 versions of a file being offered and regardless of choice the newest is not installed, nor is that on the cat site.
Best tip for updating (and times running out) because when they pull windows 7 they'll no longer need WindowsUpdateAgent 7.6 and at that stage, updating SP3 will be the same issue as trying to update SP2 2ff7e9595c
